We are now introducing a theatre arts based program to our After Three and Summer Programs at each of the three locations: Belleville, Trenton and Frankford. The implementation of theatre arts will provide our program with another tool to use when interacting with children and offer alternative and positive support methods in response to their actions and feelings. Costume design, music, dance, sound and lighting techniques, building props and creating special sound effects are just some of the areas that are explored in this program. This part of the program is specifically designed to provide an opportunity to develop areas such as self-expression, with an emphasis on enhancing positive group dynamics, listening and co-operative skills. This will enhance their self confidence, improve communication skills, all in a fun and positive learning environment. There are many studies to indicate that participants in sustained theatre arts often show gains not only in areas such as reading proficiency, but also in self control and motivation and in empathy and tolerance for others (Podlozny 2000). Bridging the Gap is also exploring the use of puppetry to encourage creative thinking skills, communication skills, confidence and self-esteem and to explore sensitive topics such as bullying or disabilities. Children and volunteers learn how to work with puppets and put on puppet shows. if you would like to book a performance for your school or community group, call the Bridging the Gap office at (613) 962-3239 |
